Ladies 1st XI

Oxford Hawks Ladies 2nd XI 6 - 3 Aylesbury Ladies 1st XI

The Aylesbury Ladies 1st XI set off on their travels to Oxford for their first away game of the second half of the season following the Christmas break.

The ladies were quick off the mark to dominate the game and deservedly grabbed the first goal following a clever through ball from Lucy Drane to Natasha James. James took on the last defender and slipped the ball into the path of Charlotte Butler who made no mistake in finishing the chance to score her first goal for the first team after recently returning to the club.

With both teams sharing the possession of play, Hawks attacked the Aylesbury D, but consistent defending from Emily Davitt at the back denied the chance of an equalizer fifteen minutes into the game, leaving Liz Sheppard to make a precise clearance. Aylesbury were able to regain their structure and a skilfully period of play by Maz Hassall and Angela Dickson in the midfield led to a chance on goal which forced a good save from the Hawks goalkeeper. However, Aylesbury were first to the ball and a well-timed pass from James set up Hannah Pigott who placed her shot under the goalkeeper to double Aylesbury’s lead.

It wasn’t long before Hawks grabbed a goal back following an overload attack to make the score 2-1. Shortly after, Aylesbury switched off and failed to clear the ball following a terrific diving save by goalkeeper Jade Hedger. Hawks were the first to the ball and took advantage of the chance to bring the scores level. With two minutes of the first half to play, Aylesbury found themselves in trouble again when Hawks were awarded a short corner following a mistimed tackle. Despite their efforts to clear the danger, a powerful shot deflected into the goal to make the score 3-2 as the half time whistle blew.

Aylesbury’s heads were down after losing such a promising lead, but an inspirational team talk from coach Manjit and Captain Cat Mohammed left Aylesbury determined to regain their lead and win the match in the second half.

The ladies started the second half with strong enthusiasm, and great vision from Josie Hassall at the back picked out Chloe Banks in-field, who took on her opponent and drove into the D, winning a short corner. Unfortunately Aylesbury were unable to convert and soon found themselves on their back foot when a Hawks attacker dribbled into the D and found the goal to make the score 4-2.

Shortly after, James powered her short past the goalkeeper and into the net following an accurate pass from Kim Yeo, but it was no consolation as Hawks went on to score two more goals before the end of the game, making the final score 6-3. The ladies were disappointed with a result that didn’t reflect the game but showed determination and good sportsmanship to continue fighting to the end.
