Now that we're in the second half of the 2018/2019 season, we need to give some thought to next year and how we get organised to ensure the sustainability of running the club. Much of this relates to the number of volunteers we have to pick up roles, responsibilities and the associated work needed to keep us operational. At the end of this season both Suzie and Graham Best will be standing down from the roles that they currently fulfil and we will need a number of people to take on the work that they have been doing for us over the past few seasons. As I am sure you all know, Suzie currently covers Treasurer and Membership Secretary roles, as well as being the main point of contact for kit orders and, until this season, she also provided teas for our opposition teams. Graham has been running the bar for us, generating thousands in profits from social events run for the club and also for members of the public who use the clubhouse as a venue for their events. The amount of work that they have put into the club over the years is immeasurable and we will certainly miss their input and support once they stand down at the end of the season so on behalf of everyone at the club I want to say thank you to them for everything that they have done for us.
Practically speaking, one of the issues that has plagued us over the years is that fewer and fewer people are offering their time to help with running the club and, if we are to make this work in the future, we need to address that situation now. To this end, we want to split out the roles of membership secretary from that of the Treasurer to spread the workload across more shoulders. Going into next season this means that we need to fill the following vacancies:
Club Treasurer to look after the club's finances
Men's Membership Secretary
Bar & Clubhouse - a team of 2 or 3 people to take responsibility for the bar and clubhouse
While these are the immediate priorities, we also desperately need more of the playing members of the club to help with umpiring matches at weekends. A number of our current crop of umpires are showing signs of physical wear and tear and could do with some additional support to make sure that we can fulfil our umpiring obligations. A number of people have stood in so far this season but we will always need more people to cover both seniors and juniors matches and the more people that we have who are prepared to help, the better things will be for all of us. The club will support you as you get up to speed and if you choose to complete the formal Umpiring qualifications, the club we reimburse your costs providing you are umpiring for us.
If you can help, or if you want to find out more about what is involved, please email me or any other member of the exec committee so that we can speak with you in more detail. And don't limit your enquiries to the roles detailed above. If you have any ideas about anything you can do, please let us know.
