Aylesbury win 5-2 against Phoenix at RAF Halton

Aylesbury welcomed Phoenix and Ranelagh 1s to RAF Halton on week 5 of the season. Aylesbury were fresh off a 4-1 win a Slough the week before. This week they were without Marc Hignell and Jim Usherwood, However Austin Greenlee, Andy McIntyre, Chris McIntyre returned for work commitment and Daniel Lindars returned for a week out injured. Phoenix and Ranelagh had seven points which was only one behind Aylesbury going into the game.

Phoenix and Ranelagh began the stronger of the two teams and they got the breakthrough early in the first half. A loose ball on the circle was pounced on by the Phoenix forward in front of Stephen Best in goal and slotted the ball into an empty net. Aylesbury kicked into life straight after going behind having a lot of the possession and creating a lot of chances. Austin Greenlee and James Penson both had good chances to bring Aylesbury level but the Phoenix keeper kept them out. Aylesbury looked like going into the break a goal down until a Phoenix defender tried timewasting and knocking the ball away which lead to the umpire upgrading the long corner to a short corner. Aylesbury grabbed this gift with both hand as Paul Gregory stepped up and a great strike into the bottom left hand corner levelled the score.

Aylesbury were hoping to build on a good end to the first half but from the push back Phoenix won a short corner and the Phoenix forward low flick gave him his second goal of the game. Again, Aylesbury kicked into life after conceding and it was not long until they were again back on level terms. After a scramble in front of the goal, the ball fell to Daniel Lindars who got the keeper to go to ground early and coolly lifted the ball over him into the net.

With the scores level at 2-2 both teams had chances to go in front. Both teams had the ball in the goal. Firstly Austin Greenlee had a goal ruled out for the ball hitting his body on a full length dive. Phoenix then went up the other end and a crash ball into the circle was attacked by a Phoenix forward and Best in goal which ended up with the ball in the goal but the touch had come off Best and was given as a long corner.

Soon after this Aylesbury went in front for the first time in the game. The ball came to Chris McIntyre on top of the circle and the strike beat the goalkeeper at the near post. The fourth followed closely afterwards. Good work down the right wing and a ball into the circle was met first time by Jake Hodgins and dispatched into the bottom corner. Daniel Lindars finished off the scoring with an interception in Aylesbury’s defensive 23 and a quick counter attack saw Austin Greenlee round the keeper only to be thwarted by a defender who could only push the ball into the path of Lindars who grabbed his second of the day.

Aylesbury are now looking to an away trip to Wokingham next weekend to maintain their undefeated start to the season.
