Undefeated in the league this season, Aylesbury entered this match full of confidence despite a number of changes due to the absence of a few key players. Aylesbury started the match strongly, building possession and looking for opportunities to open up a resolute West Hampstead defence. Aylesbury’s perseverance paid off, but sadly Smith was not able to convert a number of glorious opportunities in front of goal. Aylesbury were soon to rue their profligacy with West Hampstead breaking in numbers and finishing smartly having moved the ball swiftly beyond the Aylesbury defence. After the break, West Hampstead quickly increased their lead with a two further break away goals, after the Aylesbury midfield failed to nullify the pace of the attack. Refusing to accept defeat, Aylesbury rallied and continued to push for the goal that would get them onto the score sheet. Working the ball into the goal area, Smith wisely chose to pass rather than take the shot, and Inkly ensured the ball was forced over the line from close range. The goal lifted Aylesbury further and it was clear West Hampstead were nervous, despite a comfortable two goal lead. Soon the deficit was down to a single goal, with McIntyre displaying excellent pace and precision to finish crisply. Could Aylesbury salvage a point in the dying minutes following the award of a penalty corner, awarded following some desperate defence from West Hampstead. With Kiely taking control at the top of the circle, he shaped to drag flick the ball into the top corner. Sadly, his shot lacked the necessary precision and instead struck Aylesbury forward Best straight in the head, ending any further participation for Best in the match with a trip to hospital, and also ending any chance Aylesbury had of salvaging a point from the fixture.
