Aylesburys U12 Girls lead the Way

The Under 12 girls team of Freya, Sophia, Alex, Kiera, Iona, Alice, Phoebe, Prela, Holly and Millie travelled to north London on Sunday for a league tournament against Southgate, St Albans and High Wycombe.

Match 1 - Aylesbury v St Albans
The Aylesbury team started the match strongly, benefiting from a good warm up and team talk. Alex and Iona worked well in the middle of the field, passing the ball up to the attack who ran at the St Albans defence. Alice, together with Phoebe and Sophia marked tightly and tacked well to snuff out any opposition threat. Aylesbury pressure eventually told with Kiera scoring 2 well taken goals, latching on to great passes from Iona and Phoebe. St Albans came back into the match in the second half with a goal, but it was too little too late.
Final score Aylesbury 2, St Albans 1.

Match 2 – Aylesbury v Southgate
The second match of the day was against a strong Southgate team. Millie started in attack with Prela coming into defence and Holly into midfield. Aylesbury had to work hard in a more competitive game, but the combination of Alex, Kiera and Millie started to pressurise the Southgate D. A strong shot from Kiera was saved by the Southgate keeper but Millie was quick to the ball to slot home from close range and give Aylesbury the lead. Great defending from Prela and Phoebe and good kicks from Freya kept the score at 1-0 at half time. The second half was equally close with Southgate scoring a well taken goal. Aylesbury heads didn’t drop and 2 short corners led to more chances and then another Aylesbury goal. Final score Aylesbury 2, Southgate 1.

Match 3 – Aylesbury v High Wycombe
The final match of the day was against High Wycombe and Aylesbury knew that a win would put them at the top of the leader-board for the tournament. Almost straight from the whistle strong inter-play between Holly and Sophia led to a chance for Kiera to score from the top of the D, one nil Aylesbury. A second attack, following solid tackling and great distribution from free hits by Alice and Prela, found Millie in the opposition D. She calmly rounded the keeper to make the score 2-0. In the second half High Wycombe came back into the match, but great running from Iona and Alex, and a good save by Freya kept High Wycombe away from the Aylesbury D.
Final score Aylesbury 2, High Wycombe 0.

A great result for the team, finishing top of the leader-board against National League opposition. Coach's Player of the Day was Millie, for her goal scoring and stick work, but a great effort and teamwork from all the girls! Well done!
